Easy One Pan Gluten Free Shepherd's Pie
Nov 08, 2025
This dish is comfort food at its finest, and the best part is that it's also one pan, which makes for easier cleanup.
While I am fully aware that Shepherd's Pie is traditionally made with lamb, I am also aware that the vast majority of people in the US are not aware that Cottage Pie is typically the name for this dish in the UK.
At any rate, it's delicious and if you want to add a bit of stealth nutrition, add in some shredded carrots or zucchini while you're browning the meat.
You hardly notice it, and it make this yummy dish a bit healthier. Yay!
Ingredients
1 pound ground meat, we typically use ground beef or a ground beef and ground turkey mix
1/4 cup dried onions or 1 medium onion, diced
1-2 cloves of garlic
1 cup gluten free, quick cooking oats
3 tablespoons ketchup
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon cumin
1/4 tsp nutmeg
Fresh ground pepper, to taste
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 cup beef broth
1/2 cup of low-fat sour cream or Greek yogurt
1 cup frozen peas, thawed if you want a softer texture when eating it.
2 1/2 cups mashed potatoes
1 cup or more low-fat cheddar cheese, to taste
Directions
Fry the meat until cooked through, then drain off the grease.
If you're using a fresh onion, add with the meat while cooking.
If you're using dry onions, add after you drain the meat.
1-2 cloves of garlic, minced or use garlic confit like I make in this video: https://youtube.com/shorts/wcFdryt4yOY
Sprinkle the gluten free oats over the mixture and stir
Add ketchup, cumin, nutmeg, Worcestershire sauce and pepper, then stir again
Add the cornstarch, beef broth and sour cream or Greek yogurt and mix.
Add the peas, giving it one last stir before using the back of the spoon to smooth out the mixture.
Add dollops of the mashed potatoes and gently smooth them until you've covered the entire mixture with potatoes.
Sprinkle with cheddar cheese and bake at 350 degrees, 20-30 minutes until the cheese is melted to your liking.
Let sit for 5 minutes before serving to let the meat mixture set and settle.
