German Hot Slaw
Nov 21, 2025
I hesitated to call this German Hot Slaw because I live in the US, but my heritage is half German and I live in a city with a deep German heritage.
Don't believe me? Look up largest Oktoberfest in the US, and you'll see that the answer is Cincinnati, my hometown.
We've been making this slaw for decades and eating it most of my life.
I hope you like it as much as we do.
Ingredients
12 ounces bacon, diced
1 16 ounce package of cole slaw mix or 1 lb of shredded cabbage
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup Apple Cider Vinegar
1/4 cup sugar
Tools
Casserole dish, a deep one with a lid, if you have one, or cover with aluminum foil
Spoon for stirring and serving
Knife and cutting board for chopping onion, cabbage and kielbasa
Aluminum foil
Directions
Add the chopped bacon to a cold pan and turn the heat to medium.
As the bacon is cooking, mix water, apple cider vinegar and sugar until dissolved.
You may want to let it sit for a few minutes and then stir again.
When the bacon is to your desired crispness, add the liquid to the pan and stir to incorporate with the bacon and bacon grease.
Stir in cabbage or coleslaw mix.
We usually opt for the coleslaw mix to save time and effort.
Stir to fully incorporate, turn off the heat, cover and let sit for 5 minutes
When the time is up, the hot slaw is ready. Make a big bowl and enjoy.
Serve up in a bowl and enjoy!
